What could be better than CER + STEM Challenge + Social Emotional Learning mixed with a dash of physical science for your first week back to science??? Get your students back in the swing of a new school year with this fun "First Week of School" science activity! Perfect for upper elementary and middle school grade science teachers practicing growth mindset or SEL in the classroom to help students encourage and build up each other.
Students will complete a simple Claim-Evidence-Reasoning activity involving physical properties and states of matter, then participate in a Toothpaste STEM challenge. Finally, they will ultimately find a character building lesson on the importance of using kindness when speaking to one another. Simple, but perfect for setting classroom expectations from week one!
BONUS: Art Extension activity added!!!
Materials Needed: Toothpaste*, plates, gloves, and whatever science tools you have handy for the challenge.
*I have had questions concerning the costs of supplying toothpaste to large numbers of students. There are two ways to manage this. A) Use this as a group activity (which is how I do it) or B) for an individual activity, Amazon sells BULK travel size toothpaste. I purchased a box of 144 tubes for around $20...enough to last me six years of groups, or 2 years as an individual activity.
