What educators are saying

I used this at the start of the year as a way to get to know my students. Their autobiographies were very eye-opening.
My students and I enjoyed this activity. It helped me get an early sense of their writing and ability to follow directions and the writing process. I enjoyed learning more about my students in this way and enjoyed writing one myself.

Description

Want to get to know your students as readers and writers? Back to school has never been easier! Get to know your student readers and writers in the beginning of the school year with Reading and Writing Autobiographies.

Implementing Reading and Writing Autobiographies: Students close read an excerpt from an interview with author Ray Bradbury where he shares his favorite idea generating strategy for writing: making lists. Students then make lists of the things they love most and the things they dislike about reading and writing. Using their lists as inspiration, students write mini-autobiographies sharing both their struggles and triumphs as readers and writers.

This activity is the perfect, creative way to get to know your students and build a classroom community of readers and writers. Simply share in Google Classroom or your school LMS and get started! Answers and sample writing is included.

Includes:

  • Digital links for easy sharing and editing
  • 12 page digital and editable student packet (can be printed, but it is designed for use on a computer)
  • 13 slide teacher packet with answer key and examples
  • Rubric
