QUICK AND EFFECTIVE "MINDS ON" ACTIVITIES

RESEARCHED METHODS TO IMPROVE COGNITIVE ABILITY

MAXIMIZE LEARNING POTENTIAL AND MEMORY RETENTION

How to use this resource:

"Brain Primers" are kinetic activities that activate areas of the brain associated with cognitive ability and emotion regulation. Put simply, they "prime" the brain for learning, much like you'd prime a surface before painting.

Students are typically more engaged with brain priming activities when they understand the purpose behind them. That is why each brain primer in this resource includes a snippet of research that explains the benefits of the activity in the context of learning. You can share this research with your students at the beginning of each new brain primer activity.

When teaching High School, I typically use a brain primer at the start of each class. An alternative option is to use these brain primers as "brain breaks" by introducing them at the halfway point of the period. In Middle School, these may be best suited for an afternoon pick-me-up, or after a morning break.

Daniel Wolpert's video "The Real Reason For Brains" is a great resource for sharing with students the relationship between the body and mind, and can be found on YouTube.
