BLACK HISTORY MONTH African American Agriculturalists - Activity

In honor of Black History Month, it is important to remember the diverse contributors of the agricultural innovations and contributions we have today. In this activity, students will have the opportunity to identify and research key African American contributors.

How to use:

• Use as an introductory activity for the topic as independent work. Simply assign the activity to students individually and provide in-class time for students to fill in the sheet.
• Use for that emergency sub-plan day.
• Use in a flipped classroom as the “at home” work.
  • Assign each student a scientist.
  • Have students research their agriculturalist at home and bring information back to the next class.
  • Students will present their agriculturalist information while other students fill in their note catcher (on the pages that follow).
• Use as a make-up assignment or extra credit.
• Jigsaw assignment.
  • Divide students into groups of 2 or students could work individually.
  • Appoint one student from each group (or have students decide) as the leader.
  • Divide the agriculturalists amongst the students (assign each group a scientist).
  • Give groups time to research their scientist.
  • Have each group develop a mini-presentation that will be presented to the class next time. 
  • Have students present their agriculturalists to the class while other students are filling in the rest of their note catcher (on the pages that follow).
