SLPS and TEACHERS LIKE YOU SAID…

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Aimee says: Amazing, amazing, amazing! I printed individual pieces as well to help introduce our core word of the week. Then we put them together to create the big board.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Christin says: A 2nd-grade student came to me with no verbal communication and no aac in place. After little luck with a high-tech device, I bought this and started with only 16 core words and velcro. He quickly caught on and was using it functionally before a month was up. Thank you for helping me give him a voice!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Kailee says: I have been using this board in my speech room for 2 years now (I don't know how I never reviewed it until now!) and it is amazing!! I use it for my emerging language/AAC kiddos but also to provide visual support for my other language students working on WH question types, building simple sentences, etc. I am obsessed with the large poster-size board and love that I can remove the symbols to isolate a given target word if needed! This is an absolute staple in my therapy room!!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Jackie says: We have placed this board in all of our preschool classrooms, bathrooms, waiting areas, and in multiple locations along the hallways. We use this board during all group language lessons and highlight one or more words a week. We are also using this board to teach our typical kids how to help our kids who need the communication board to function so that they can be better communication partners.

Do you struggle with planning functional communication therapy?

Do you leave those sessions feeling frustrated and like nothing is working?

Add structure, consistency, and fun to your sessions by using Core Vocabulary. You’ll be amazed at how you can do more with less!

What is AAC core vocabulary?

Core vocabulary is a small set of simple words in any language used frequently and across multiple contexts (Cross, Baker, Klotz & Badman, 1997). These words make up 75-80% of the words we use every day. The Big Core Classroom Vocabulary Board is based on the DLM Core Vocabulary. This is a list of words that have been determined to be highly useful for communicating in both social and academic contexts.

Core vocabulary examples: (think of a student pointing to these words instead of becoming frustrated)

  • My turn.
  • Don't.
  • Not like.
  • Not want.
  • Go.
  • Want it.

The board is color-coded by parts of speech using the Modified Fitzgerald Key (a system developed by Goossens,’ Crain, & Elder).

  • Blue: Adjectives
  • Green: Verbs
  • Yellow: Pronouns
  • Orange: Nouns
  • White: Conjunctions
  • Pink: Prepositions, social words
  • Purple: Questions
  • Red: Important function words, negation, emergency words
  • Grey: Determiners

Creating this board has truly been a labor of love. I hope you and your students love this as much as my students and I do.
