Description

Avatar - Movie Guide Questions, Assignments, Key (Colonialism/Environmentalism) - This 13 page Avatar movie guide contains a set of 16 questions, 2 assignments, rubrics and a detailed teachers key. This Avatar movie guide centers on the themes of colonialism or imperialism, environmentalism and environmental issues, and corporate responsibility which are heavily featured in the movie Avatar.

The 16 questions are based on the major scenes and themes of the movie Avatar and require both student comprehension and analysis of the movie. The last question is a Venn diagram that requires students to compare and contrast the perspective of the humans with that of the Na'vi in terms of their views on the environment and environmental issues. The themes of colonialism and corporate responsibility are also featured in the questions. The questions come with a detailed teachers key for ease of assessment.

This Avatar movie guide also includes two assignments related to the movie. First, students will be asked to complete a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting the events in Avatar and the Na'vi with that of the history of colonialism in North America and the impact it had on Native Americans/First Nations. This assignment includes a teachers key, teachers explanation, and web link for research. As well, it includes a possibility for extension and differentiation and a marking rubric. The second assignment is a research assignment in which students will compare and contrast the events of the movie Avatar with the development of the oil sands in Alberta, Canada. Avatar director, James Cameron, has been openly critical of the oil sands development in Alberta and many believe Avatar is making a comment on the environmental impacts of the oil sands. For this assignment students will research the environmental impacts of the oil sands development and analyze its relationship with that of the events of Avatar. The assignment includes a teachers explanation with web links for research and a marking rubric for ease of assessment. Both assignments are excellent tools to expand the learning of the movie Avatar.

This movie guide and the movie Avatar are great tools in any history or social studies classroom. Avatar has many themes but centers on the issues of colonialism, environmentalism, environmental issues, and corporate responsibility.
