Description

This engaging activity puts a fun spin on reviewing the five author's purposes for writing! Author's purpose is a concept that I have to revisit with my students throughout the year, so I created this activity to do with my students at the beginning of April... right before state testing! When the craftivities are finished, you can use them to create a fun spring bulletin board or school hallway display for Earth Day.

Students will complete three worksheets that contain five short passages related to Earth Day and/or caring for the environment. This version features FIVE author's purposes: persuade, inform, entertain, describe, and explain. (If your students only learn persuade, inform, and entertain, however, you can easily just delete the other two passages from the packet when you make your copies.)

The directions tell students to write a complete, detailed sentence to explain the author's purpose. One-word answers like simply "inform" are not allowed. Rather, a complete, detailed answer might say something like "The author's primary purpose for writing this passage is to explain to the reader how to make a compost pile."

After students have completed the worksheets, they are ready to color and cut out the passages and images. Student-friendly directions are included so that you can place the directions under your document camera, and students can refer to them as they complete the project. Students use the globe images to create flaps, and they rewrite each author's purpose sentence beneath the flaps. An answer key is also included.
