This unit is for teaching the PIE method of 3 types of author's purpose - persuade, inform, and entertain.

Teach author's purpose with these 3 colorful posters including definitions and examples, 28 task cards, foldable with teacher's notes and detailed instructions, and test for upper elementary and middle grades.
The paragraphs on the task cards and test for author's purpose are more complex than other cards intended for use with 2nd-3rd graders. The paragraphs average about 6-8 lengthy sentences with more complex text to challenge students in upper elementary and middle grades. Additionally, students must dig deeper to determine the author's purpose as it is not always a clear cut, easy answer.
The task cards include 2 questions: What is the author's purpose? and - How do you know? The task card answer sheet includes a section for listing the purpose as well as providing evidence. The answer key includes the correct purpose as well as sample answers for evidence even though answers may vary slightly. All of your work is done for you! This unit is ready to PRINT and GO with low prep from you.
The posters include bold text that is easy to read a distance away. They can be used as "slides" projected for students while you teach author's purpose or printed and displayed in your classroom.
