What educators are saying

My students found this spectra lab very helpful in understanding how scientists find information out about stars. Students were able to do the activity independently but it was enough of a challenge to keep them engaged. We used this activity in our stars unit.
I love all of Surffdoggy's resources and use them exactly as presented. This was very easy to use and explain to students. They were engaged, talking to each other, and felt proud of their learning.

Description

(21 pages) This activity is an easy and effective introduction to spectra. Learning about spectra is interesting and important because each element’s spectra is like a fingerprint - no two are exactly alike. Incredible! Spectra are obtained from a star’s light, and it has been said that perhaps 75% of everything we know about the cosmos is due to spectroscopic studies. A star's spectra provides astronomers with clues as to the star's age, mass, motion, temperature, and destiny. In this activity, DARK LINE spectra are used, and students determine the different elements (2 or 3) present in a gas sample based on the dark line spectra produced. This is one of our Station Cards cooperative learning activities, and sixteen practice stations, labels, and answers are included.
