Asking relevant questions to keep a conversation going is an important skill to learn for conversations and building relationships with others. However, it can be difficult for some students, including those with autism. This strategic resource guides students through activities with 4 levels of difficulty to teach them how to ask questions that (1) remain on topic and (2) do not ask for information that has already been answered in the initial statement. With multiple levels of difficulty, you have the flexibility to start at your student's current level and help them grow.

This resource also includes leading statements to practice conversation skills with adults and peers. Leading statements are a great stepping stone to reinforcing the skills needed for meaningful and natural conversations. It can also help students develop their own voice as they respond in ways that reflect their unique personalities and thoughts!

This resource includes full-page cards (great for digital use), a matching worksheet, smaller printable cards for easy storage, and blank cards that allow students to apply their own creativity! You can use this social skills resource in digital or print format. For best results when printing, print in portrait. For digital use, draw/type on the screen using a compatible online platform.

With the exception of the open-ended cards, please note that the leading statements for the basic and advanced cards are the same. However, the answer choices for the basic and advanced cards are different. The printable leading statement cards contain leading statements from the basic/advanced cards and the open-ended cards. Please don't hesitate to ask a question if you need clarification on the content of this resource!
