These second grade reading centers provide rigorous practice of challenging standards-based reading skills. All of the center activities are focused on asking ans answering questions to help students master this nonfiction reading skill. These centers can be used as a supplement to any reading curriculum.

Center activities include reading passages, sorting, matching, task cards, and comprehension questions. The final center is a reading response activity. Students will need access to nonfiction picture books to complete this activity.

We’ve made it simple to incorporate these low-prep lessons into your reading instruction. The centers include student-friendly directions and are intended to be clear enough for students to complete independently while still providing adequate practice of the reading skill.

❤️❤️ Why You’ll Love it: ❤️❤️

  • Easy to prep and use materials save valuable time
  • Hands-on center activities are fun and engaging
  • Each center focuses on one standard-based reading skill at a time
  • Provides rigorous practice and preparation for standardized tests

How to Use in Class:

  • These centers are perfect to use during reading workshop. They were created to be used by small groups of students while you are meeting with guided reading groups. The reading passages were designed so that they can be completed independently by second graders.
  • This resource is intended to be over a two-week time frame, but this can easily be adjusted to meet your needs. How long these centers take will also depend on how much center time you have and how quickly your students work. If students finish centers early, they can read a book to themselves.
  • This reading center includes 5 center activities and one student recording book. The answers to all five centers can be written into the one recording book. The recording book takes two sheets of paper.
  • Five different center activities give you lots of options to keep students busy while you meet with small groups.
  • I highly recommend putting all five centers out and allowing your students to complete the center activities in any order that they wish.
  • These centers take 4-6 sheets of paper. I do recommend cardstock and lamination for durability. Depending on the size of your groups, you might want to print more than one copy of each center.
  • Center 5 requires that students read two different books and respond to a question relating to the unit skill. You can allow them to use read alouds, choose books from your classroom library, or choose from books that you have preselected. You could even have them use a story from your basal.

Differentiation:

  • Centers are easy to differentiate. Some students may complete all 5 centers during the time frame. Other students may only complete two or three center activities or parts of each center. It is easy for students to work at their own pace.
  • Allow students to work with a partner if they struggle with independent center work
  • Students can use different leveled texts for reading response activities.
  • Allow students to utilize reference materials for assistance completing centers.
