My entire collection of Asian women's short reads are multi-use and good for a variety of reasons. Include more women in your studies during Women's History Month or if you teach world history Asian history, be sure your course includes these fabulous women and women's issues.
Empress Wu and Empress Cixi defied the odds and ruled China in their own ways. Foot binding and filial piety are also possible subjects you can read about and I guarantee they are part of your world or Asian history course.
Empress Suiko was the first of eight Japanese empresses. Students can also read about them and how they shaped Japan. Learn about Japan's great literary history by studying Murasaki Shikibu and her novel the Tale of Genji, the world's first novel. Students will learn the history of geisha and their place in Japanese culture along with the contribution of Ama pearl divers and Izumo no Okuni, the creator of kabuki.
Queen Seondeok was the queen of Silla, an early Korean kingdom, who fought war and sexism in her time.
The Tru'ng Sisters were military leaders who are still celebrated in Vietnam today.
