Description

Three lessons in one!!! This activity is designed to help students differentiate between Argumentative, Explanatory and Narrative essay/story Writing. This is a great lesson for Common Core Standards and test prep.

With your purchase, you get 12 sorting cards (4 cards for each writing type). Each writing type will have the following cards: 1) a Name card (ex. "Argumentative Essay"); 2) A "Textbooks vs. Tablets Performance Task" card. 3) A "Sample Thesis Statement/Topic" card 4) A "My Outline" card. You will also get and "After Sort Activity" and a Quiz. All activities have answer keys (your sort cards are in order when you download them, which is the answer key for the sort.)

All you have to do is print out the cards (there are 2 cards per page which means you will have to cut each sort-page in half. Print the sort cards on card stock or laminated paper for durability. On the day of the sort, put your students in groups of 4, scramble the cards and hand them to groups of 4 and see if they can put the cards in the correct order! The least amount of hints you give the better!

Once students have figured out the order, they can do the "After Sorting Activity" to really figure out which clue words allowed them to know which writing type was on each card. Students will also work together to write a thesis and detailed outline based on each Performance Task card [I noticed my students would only write "body paragraph 1, 2", etc. but had trouble identifying what the body paragraphs were about (which means they were not making the connection between a thesis and body paragraphs). This is why this concept is stressed on that portion of the After Sorting Activity...FYI]. Lastly, students will take a quiz to see how much they know about what goes into each paragraph of their essay/narrative.

This lesson has been taught by my 7th and 8th grade ELA departments and the teachers loved it because of the cognitive demand, collaboration among students, and the similarities between Performance Task Cards and the SBAC Test. We taught it over three 50 minute periods: Day 1: (Sort followed by After Sort Activity; Day 2: After Sort Activity and review for the quiz; Day 3:Review then quiz.

I hope your students benefit from this lesson!
