- Essay Rubric that students can use to help guide their writing and also for you as the teacher to easily grade their work.

First Page
Allows students to choose a side of an issue or argument and state their three reasons why they are defending that side
Second Page
Breaks down the introductory paragraph sentence-by-sentence (with solid examples to work with!) to guide students in creating a powerful and clear opening.
Third and Fourth Pages
Body paragraph organizing pages provide examples of transitions words to use, sentence starters, and what information should be found in a body paragraph, including text evidence, statistics, facts, and quotes.
Fifth Page
The third body paragraph (in the Chocolate Milk example organizer) students are introduced to and shown (with examples) how to write a counterclaim defense paragraph. In the Spotted Owl organizer, the third body paragraph is not a specific counterclaim paragraph.
Sixth Page
Breaks down the conclusion paragraph sentence-by-sentence (with solid examples to work with!) to guide students in creating a meaningful and defining conclusive paragraph.
How Do I Use It?
You can print the PDF versions and use them as-is, or you can open the Microsoft Word versions and edit them as needed!
There are two versions of the organizer; one version includes the counterclaim writing skill, while the other just guides students to create a third body paragraph similar to the first and second, introducing a new reason.
