Description

Use the magic of Microsoft Excel to generate countless examples to demonstrate area concepts, stimulate discussion, and build student confidence and competence.

ALL the work has been done for you! All you have to do is:

1. Open the downloaded Excel file.

2. Click on one of the lesson tabs located at the bottom of the screen.

3. Press the appropriate key(s) to generate an example (F9 for PC; Command + Equal for Macs).

4. Demonstrate, discuss, review, and learn.

5. Then with a simple key press, generate another example.

This complete unit for “Area of Polygons” includes three types of activities:

1) Introductory Lessons - Generates polygons on a grid with sides color-coded for length, width, and height. It shows the formula, plugs in matching color-coded values into the formula, and calculates the result.

2) Practice - Generates a polygon on a grid, but removes the calculations. This provides students the opportunity to independently practice finding the necessary measurements and then plug them into the formula to find the area of each polygon. Great for practice, warm ups, reviews, and games.

3) Worksheets - Printable worksheets provide students with nine polygons. Perfect as an assignment or a quiz. There are worksheets specific to each polygon (i.e. only rectangles or only trapezoids) as well as mixed-practice worksheets for comprehensive practice.

Topics covered include:

* Squares - Introduction and practice.

* Rectangles - Introduction, practice, and a mixed practice worksheet (squares and rectangles).

* Parallelograms - Introduction, practice with the height shown, practice without the height shown, worksheet for just parallelograms, and a mixed practice worksheet (squares, rectangles, and parallelograms).

* Right Triangles - Introduction, practice, and a right triangles worksheet.

* More Triangles (right, acute, and obtuse triangles) - Introduction, practice with the height shown, practice without the height shown, an “all” triangles worksheet, and a mixed practice worksheet (squares, rectangles, parallelograms, and triangles).

* Trapezoids 1 (the parallel sides of each shown trapezoid are horizontal) - Introduction, practice with the height shown, practice without the height shown, and a trapezoid worksheet.

* Trapezoids 2 (the parallel sides can be horizontal or vertical) - Introduction, practice with the height shown, practice without the height shown, a trapezoid worksheet, and a mixed practice worksheet (squares, rectangles, parallelograms, triangles, and trapezoids).

* Keys for all worksheets.
