Overview: (this resource includes)

  • Area and Perimeter Word Problems
  • Area Word Problems
  • Perimeter Word Problems
  • Area and Perimeter Missing Sides Word Problems
  • Comparing Area and Perimeter Word Problems

WHAT'S INCLUDED?

✅AREA AND PERIMETER MINI LESSON

There is an interactive mini-lesson included that students can glue into their notebooks to help them have something to reference after learning how to tackle word problems. This interactive notebook entry is "no-nonsense" which means that students simply have to cut and glue. There is no folding to make it easier for you to teach the lesson faster and to keep students on track.

✅16 AREA AND PERIMETER WORD PROBLEM WORKSHEETS

In the ten worksheets included, students practice:

  • determining area or perimeter
  • finding area
  • finding perimeter
  • finding area or perimeter
  • finding missing side given area
  • finding missing side given perimeter
  • finding missing side given either
  • finding same area or same perimeter
  • solving a mix of area, perimeter, and missing sides
  • solving multi-step problems
  • area and perimeter word problems error analysis

✅ 4 AREA AND PERIMETER WORD PROBLEM PAGES

Students look at four different work samples and decide which pages are right and which are wrong based on what is shown. These are perfect for math talk or whole group discussions. The error analysis pages help with evaluating common third grade math mistakes.

✅BUG GAME

There are also 16 area and perimeter word problem game cards included. In the game, students play to collect bugs that are worth points. Each time they spin the bug spinner, they have to answer a word problem relating to area or perimeter. The player who has the most bug points at the end wins!

✅ BUILD A DINNER PLATE GAME

Each player gets a background to build their dinner plate on. Playing cards and food pieces go in the middle. Each time you get an answer correct, you earn a piece for your dinner plate. Chance cards are provided to spice up gameplay. You never know who’s going to win with these included! The first person to finish getting 10 food items on their dinner plate wins!

✅ AREA AND PERIMETER WORD PROBLEMS WHOLE CLASS GAME

I call this game "Bucket Filler!". Set up the task cards all around the room for students. Print enough of each task card for every student. Give each student a recording sheet. Let students wander the room and solve each task card. When they solve a card, they bring it to the teacher to be checked. If it's correct, they get to drop the task card in a bucket. At the end of gameplay, the teacher draws names out of the bucket. Those students earn a small prize as a reward (an eraser, a pencil, etc).

✅ AREA & PERIMETER WORD PROBLEMS RACING GAME

This game is called "Line Them Up!". In the game, students race to see which team can line their cards up in the correct order first. Here are the steps to play. Mix up each set of cards well. Give a set of cards to each team. Start the race. Students find the START card first. They put this down. Once the start card is found, students find the answer to the equation. They continue to “Line Them Up” until they reach the FINISH card. The first team done wins!

✅21 AREA AND PERIMETER POSTERS

There are 21 area and perimeter posters for you to hang on the wall for students to reference during your area and perimeter unit. These are a great helpful reminder for students when learning about the difference between area and perimeter.

A black and white version of each game and activity is included. This is perfect for a 3rd grade area and perimeter or 4th grade area and perimeter unit.

This aligns with 3rd Grade Common Core Standards 3.MD.5-3.MD.8:

  • Recognize area as an attribute of plane figures and understand concepts of area measurement.
  • Measure areas by counting unit squares (square cm, square m, square in, square ft, and improvised units).
  • Relate area to the operations of multiplication and addition.
  • Solve real world and mathematical problems involving perimeters of polygons, including finding the perimeter given the side lengths, finding an unknown side length, and exhibiting rectangles with the same perimeter and different areas or with the same area and different perimeters.

This aligns with 3rd Grade Texas TEKS:

  • TEKS 3.6C: determine the area of rectangles with whole number side lengths in problems using multiplication related to the number of rows times the number of unit squares in each row
  • TEKS 3.6D: decompose composite figures formed by rectangles into non-overlapping rectangles to determine the area of the original figure using the additive property of area
  • TEKS 3.7B: determine the perimeter of a polygon or a missing length when given perimeter and remaining side lengths in problems

This aligns with Florida BEST Standards (B.E.S.T.)

  • MA.3.GR.2.1 Explore area as an attribute of a two-dimensional figure by covering the figure with unit squares without gaps or overlaps. Find areas of rectangles by counting unit squares.
  • MA.3.GR.2.2 Find the area of a rectangle with whole-number side lengths using a visual model and a multiplication formula.
  • MA.3.GR.2.3 Solve mathematical and real-world problems involving the perimeter and area of rectangles with whole-number side lengths using a visual model and a formula.
