Description

Integrate history and have students compute area and perimeter while learning about America's first president, George Washington and his Mount Vernon gardens. Students are challenged to design and plant gardens with different types of crops used by George Washington, computing the area and perimeter as they go.

This set of 8 math lessons really make student think. SMART Board files also accompany the lessons. This set includes 119 pages of math and social studies materials!

I love this unit because it is fun, teaches a bit of history, and is a perfect way to reinforce the multiplication using the area model and students will be doing lots of addition as they compute the perimeter of George Washington's various gardens.

You will also receive a PowerPoint slideshow of George Washington's real gardens and his Mount Vernon estate grounds. I took these photos while living on the estate grounds as part of the Mount Vernon Teacher Institute.

Included Materials:

  • 12 Student Worksheets, Pre and Post Assessments and all Answer Keys
  • 7 pages of SMART Board files to accompany the lessons (not needed to use this set but very fun if you have a SMART Board)
  • Mount Vernon Garden PowerPoint slideshow with Information and real photos (27 slides)
  • Ideas for differentiation & extension
  • CCSS Math: Common Core Math Standard correlations
  • Technology links for math and social studies for extension and enrichment

Background for these lessons:

During the summer of 2010, I attended the week-long Mount Vernon Teacher Institute, chosen one of two teachers to represent the state of Oregon. While there, I lived on the grounds of Mount Vernon and received world-class instruction on the subject of George Washington, Mount Vernon, and the history of the time.

One of the institute requirements was to create a lesson plan. This lesson plan, The Gardens of George Washington, won the Elementary Lesson Plan of the Year! These lessons helps you integrate history with your math lessons. I have taught these lessons for two years with incredible success. During that time, I changed and modified the lessons to include SMART Board lessons, worksheets, answer keys, pre and post assessments, slide shows, ideas for differentiation, common core correlations, and technology links for enrichment which are included in your purchase.

Learn some history of our first president while learning math. Enjoy!
