Using an area model, or box model, to teach multiplication is an excellent way to build conceptual understanding that the standard algorithm for multiplication does not provide. For the past 9 years, I have used only area models when teaching multiplication (no standard algorithm) and I have seen a HUGE improvement in accuracy and number sense.
How am I supposed to teach them to multiply 3-digit numbers when they can't multiply 1-digit numbers? Including in this bundle are six 4th grade lessons to lay a strong foundation for multiplication. In my experience, students come to 5th grade with weak fact fluency. The secret is to start small and build slowly. This unit takes kids from 2 x 1 digit problems to 3 x 3 digit problems in just 12 days!
The lessons in this unit alternate between numeric problems and word problems. This gives kids two full days to master one type of problem before the difficulty cranks up and the numbers get bigger. The scaffolded approach will have students of all levels multiplying with mastery in no time!
