What educators are saying

I used this as an end of the unit review with my Math 7 classes. The students were engaged throughout the escape room and enjoyed the variety of puzzles. Great resource and one I will use again next year.
We did this activity to celebrate Pi day. The students loved working through the tasks. It was challenged all students. Loved that the digital version would not let them move on until they answered correctly. The hints were helpful when they got the wrong answer.

Description

Finding the circumference and area of a circle will help your students escape the Oval, I mean Circle, Office in this engaging digital escape room. This online activity is perfect for Pi Day on March 14 (3.14) or any time to review geometry standards relating to the formulas for area and circumference of a circle. Puzzles will have students deriving pi by finding the ratio between a circle's circumference and diameter, finding the area of a portion of a circle, solving problems to open a safe, and much more. The puzzles in this online breakout go beyond the basic calculations of area and circumference using radius and diameter, so please view the preview file carefully to make sure your students are up for the challenge!

This online breakout uses a Google Form™ to automate the escape process. Anybody with an internet connection can use this form, you DO NOT need to be a Google Classroom™ user to use this product! There is virtually no prep, and the activity is self-checking, making it very simple for teachers to implement. This is a great worksheet alternative for either face-to-face or remote/distance learning!

Skills needed to complete this escape room (please see the preview for images of the actual problems):

  • Understand the relationship between the radius and the diameter of a circle
  • Know that the formula to find the circumference of a circle is C=pi x d
  • Know that the formula to find the area of a circle is A=pi x r^2
  • Solve word problems requiring finding the radius, diameter, circumference, or area of a circle
  • Find the area of a portion of a circle
  • When given an area in terms of pi, find the radius of the circle (if the area of a circle is 36pi, what is the radius?)
  • When given a circumference, find the diameter by solving the equation for d
  • Solve simple substitution ciphers
  • Solve equations by substituting values for variables
  • Have a firm grasp of 7th grade geometry standard 7.G.B.4

FAQ

  • Do students need to have Gmail™ accounts? NO! Anyone with internet access and a tablet, computer, or even phone can complete the breakout. The escape room is automated by a Google Form™, but does not require the teacher or students to have Google™ accounts.
  • How long will this take? That is the hardest question as the answer varies depending on each classroom, student, or group. Some students with a firm grasp on the concepts covered in this escape room will be able to complete the challenge very quickly (20 minutes), others will take longer. Allowing calculators to be used will make this activity much faster. The majority of students will take between 35-45 minutes. Requiring students to use the recording form will increase the amount of time required to complete the puzzles. The form will not save student data, so if you are worried about your students not finishing on time, simply have them write their answers on scratch paper. They can then come back and quickly re-enter their answers and pick up where they left off.
  • Will students have to search the web to figure out the puzzles? NO! All of the information needed will be provided in the Google Form™. The math in this activity is all standards-based.

Escape rooms are great for reviewing before tests, providing enrichment, and encouraging collaboration and student engagement.
