What educators are saying

Modified and used parts of this project as a final unit project for my grade fives who need to learn about area and perimeter
Love it! I think my kids will like it. Going to do part of it next week. Great end of the year thing.

Description

A real-world math project wherein students are architects designing their own home, working with measurements, conversion, area, perimeter, volume, percentages and money. This booklet with 18 unique pages (and extra pages for additional working) is rich with activities and scaffolded pages and graphic organisers for calculations and answer-in-the-text reading. The entire resources focuses on both the literacy and numeracy components required when building a house. Metric system and UK English.

Contents

  • title page and project brief; conditions of house building; aerial view of the land with dimensions; planning pages; graphing paper; graphic organisers for brainstorming and calculations (perimeter, area, volume, unit conversions); architectural symbols research; application for building permit; cost analysis; picking a builder (percentage discounts and fees); building quote invoice; personal reflection; and grading criteria/rubric.

Instructions for use

This booklet can be assigned as homework, assessment or in-class work. Depending on the level of your students, students can work independently, in pairs, or even small groups. This booklet is not intended to stand completely alone, but you will easily be able to model the calculations required in the booklet. This booklet is ideal for vocational students.

What teachers are saying about this resource:

  • I used this before Christmas break with my combined 7th/8th grade Algebra class. They absolutely loved it! I even had my students who miss most assignments turn in this one. It was great fun and a perfect assignment for that rough time right before the holidays!
  • Love the integration of math into the project and the realistic details with where the plot was and the measurements created!
  • Really excited to use with my High Ability students!
  • Loved how many different topics this project brought together. Unit conversions, unit costs, etc. Really made my students bring together everything we've been talking about in the area and surface area unit.
  • Fantastic unit/assessment task involving "real world/life mathematics". Allows the student to construct a home applying perimeter, area, costing (to mention a few). It personalizes it for the students with a project brief and student reflection. The building application form and building requirements legitimizes the "real world" nature of this work for the students. This will sure be a winner for my students!
