App Smashing 101 (10 App Smashing recipes)

This is a Powerpoint presentation that I created to use to teach the teachers in my district how to smash multiple apps together to get more technology into the elementary and middle school classrooms. To access the links you need to start the slideshow before you are able to click on them. There are examples of how to use these recipes at both levels ranging from Kindergarten to 8th grade. All of these recipes can be adapted for any subject from reading (book summaries, character traits, creating images....) math (story problems, algorithms, algebra, geometry....) and Science and Social Studies topics such as World War II, Plants, Animals, Weather, Geography.... The possibilities are endless. Be creative and have fun teaching. Let your students come up with their own recipes.

To start: Teach each individual app (tutorials are included). Refer to your own curriculum and be creative on how these recipes will fit. Have your students create something in each app. Always use your camera roll as a conduit between each app. Create something in your first app and save it to your camera roll. Then, all you have to do is open your second app and upload your saved picture or video into that app. I have included App smashing dice that can be used once all of the apps have been taught so that your students can create their own recipes.

App smashing is content created in one app that is transferred to and enhanced by a second or third app. Preferably the final product is then published to the web- remember, digital presence is the new resume!

There are multiple reasons to app smash.
1. It demands creativity from your students.
2. You get more bang for the buck with the use of multiple apps.
3. It turns the issue of not having that "wonder app" into a positive.
4. It removes any restrictions for taking a topic as far as it can be taken.
5. It often results in more engaging learning products with more engaged learners.
6. It is a motivator, especially for those students lacking motivation. (After all, we are now teaching digital natives).
7. It's a fun and engaging challenge for the digital natives.
8. It is a great use of 21st century skills.
9. It is a great way to demand creativity to hit those Common Core and curriculum standards!!!!
10. These recipes follow the SAMR model to bring your learners into higher levels of thinking and creating. It also follows the Blooms Taxonomy model in requiring students to create pieces to prove their learning.
