Engage your students with studying the incredible animals of the world!

Did you know there are more than 1 million types of animals in the world? From a puppy in New York to a giant panda in Beijing, animals are complex organisms that come in many different shapes and sizes. For this assignment, students choose an animal to study and create a project to showcase their learning.

This resource guides students through the process of conducting their own research report on an animal. First, students choose an animal to study and learn how to properly conduct research. Next, students showcase their learning by creating a poster board, presentation board, PowerPoint, or dodecahedron. Afterwards, students present their projects to the class and self-assess their achievement. To help students choose a research topic (and to introduce the project to the class) we have included a PowerPoint that features the Top 10 Research Topics.

Project-Based Learning (PBL) is a student-centered pedagogy in which students are challenged to actively learn about a subject for an extended period of time. It is a form of active learning or inquiry-based learning. Project-Based Learning is in contrast to paper-based, rote memorization, or teacher-led instruction that presents established facts. NGSSMS-LS4-1
Analyze and interpret data for patterns in the fossil record that document the existence, diversity, extinction, and change of life forms throughout the history of life on Earth under the assumption that natural laws operate today as in the past. Emphasis is on finding patterns of changes in the level of complexity of anatomical structures in organisms and the chronological order of fossil appearance in the rock layers. Assessment does not include the names of individual species or geological eras in the fossil record.
