The Olympic Games. The Ancient Greeks loved competition of all sorts. Each year, the various city-states of Greece sent athletes to festivals of games, which were held to honor Zeus. The games were officially held every four years from 776 BC, but they possibly originated much earlier. A Greek myth credited the hero Herakles, better known as Hercules, with creating the running competitions at Olympia to celebrate the end of one of his missions called the twelve labors.
