Description

Students learn the essential points about four civilizations from the ancient Mesopotamian and Mediterranean world in one lesson! Students read short essays with helpful map visuals, then synthesize information (such as origins, location, achievements, and interaction with other civilizations) into their charts. Includes complete teacher answer key.

I often set the lesson up as a jigsaw activity, having students first read and become an expert on one civilization with a small group, then move into mixed groups and teach each other. Having students present what they learned to the whole class is also an option. The last part of the lesson asks students to make a judgment about the overall positive or negative impact of each culture, which invariably leads to some fiery debate between students wanting to defend "their" civilization!

This lesson is ideal for classes needing to prepare for Regents or AP World exams, as it gets the important information across clearly and succinctly and allows for dynamic comparison and contrast between civilizations.
