What educators are saying

This was a great resource for teaching about Greek forms of democracy. It is one of the first activities where I saw students really comprehend the difference between direct and representative democracy.
This was such a fun activity to do with my 6th graders. The reading was concise, but informative. The democracy activity was a lot of fun! The kids loved getting to vote and have their say.

Description

Democracy, Ancient Greek style! You'll love this resource that engages students in the tenets of Greek Democracy by having them participate in it first-hand! There are three hands-on (votes up!) activities that guide students through the similarities and differences between Greek (Direct) Democracy and Representative Democracy. The graphics are great, the activities are fun, when the votes are in, I think your students will love it!

What do they need to know about Greece before completing this activity? Well, they should know that there is a country called Greece! That's it! That makes it perfect for teaching U.S. Government as well as the government of Ancient Greece. Can you say Constitution Week? I think you can! (Hat tip to Mr. Rogers.)

Let's find out more about the activities!

★ ACTIVITY 1: Democracy is a-MAZE-ing!

In this activity, students will learn about Athenian (Direct) Democracy and Representative Democracy. An information handout is provided, and students are grouped together. They're each assigned a part of the information sheet to become an expert on. Once students have read and shared the information, they will complete a maze that allows them to self-check their learning.

ACTIVITY 2: Democracy Challenge

For this activity, students will engage in mock voting as both an Athenian Democracy and a Representative Democracy. Students will be split into two groups and two voting prompts will be provided. For voting prompt 1, students will follow their specific democracy process and come to a decision. For voting prompt 2, groups will switch and complete the voting prompt through the other democracy process and come to a decision.

ACTIVITY 3: Democracy Comparison

Students will think about both Athenian Democracy and Representative Democracy and how they are similar and different. Students will show their thinking on the provided Venn diagram. It's a very unusual Venn, so check out the preview/thumbnails to see what I mean.
