What educators are saying

This is a great resource to keep the students engaged and continue learning about the topic. Great supplement activity.
I used this with my homeschooled sixth grader for a fun hands on observational science lesson to pair with our study of ancient Egypt. I loved the questions and thought the directions were clear. Thanks!

Description

Get your students engaged in mummification while studying Ancient Egypt. Students make their own mummy in this hands on activity that brings together science and history. Students investigate what type of salt works best to preserve mummies. This is a great way to learn about Ancient Egyptian culture.

In the first part, students test different salt solutions to see which works the best to preserve apple slices. They also read about the science of mummification to understand what is happening during the process.

In the second part, students choose one of the salt solutions to make apple mummy heads. Students carve apple heads and pack them in salt mixtures and leave them there for a week. After a week, students remove their mummies and see they have changed.

Both activities take 4 - 5 days to complete, but most of this is inactive time - waiting for the mummification process to take place.
