What educators are saying

This project earned me some major cool points with my students! They LOVED doing this stem project and were so eager to show off their designs at parent teacher conferences. Will use again in the future
Just what I was looking for our Ancient Egypt unit study for our homeschool! It was a little advanced for my girls, but we look forward to coming back around to it when they are a little older.

Description

Ancient Egypt Chariot STEM Challenge - Engineering Design with Digital Journals

Take your students on an educational journey to ancient Egypt with this complete lesson! Read the letter from fictitious travel guides explaining some of the structures, wildlife, and inventions found in Egypt. Then conduct an icebreaker activity building a pyramid out of cups. Students will test their skills deciphering a code using ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics before moving on to the highly engaging design challenge. Using the engineering design process, student teams are tasked with designing a chariot to safely carry an ancient Egyptian down a pyramid! Students learn about the STEM vocabulary words of "velocity" and "innovation" as well as the STEM careers of archaeology and civil engineering to bring in a real-world STEM connection. Related math problems extend the learning fun!

As with many STEM activities that are student-driven, this challenge can be tailored to students of various skill levels and abilities.

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Describe measurable attributes of objects, such as length or weight. Describe several measurable attributes of a single object.
Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common, to see which object has “more of”/“less of” the attribute, and describe the difference. For example, directly compare the heights of two children and describe one child as taller/shorter.
Express the length of an object as a whole number of length units, by laying multiple copies of a shorter object (the length unit) end to end; understand that the length measurement of an object is the number of same-size length units that span it with no gaps or overlaps.
Organize, represent, and interpret data with up to three categories; ask and answer questions about the total number of data points, how many in each category, and how many more or less are in one category than in another.
Measure the length of an object by selecting and using appropriate tools such as rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks, and measuring tapes.
