This unit is titled "Ancient China. Bundle - 16 Products."
It includes 16 products. The unit begins with an activity introducing the topic in which students create a museum in only 8 objects. We then investigate whether the Xia Dynasty really existed with a Gallery Walk lesson before exploring the brutality of Emperor Qin's first rule. Students question whether the man who united China was terrific or a tyrant and build on the skill of interpretation. They then make a Travel Guide for the Great Wall, take part in a great inference lesson on the Terracotta Warriors, before heading out on a journey to the Forbidden Palace to see what can be learned from Ancient Chinese architecture. Students take part in a Blind Date lesson to understand the significance of Ancient philosophies, compare TCM to modern medicine and in so going build on the skill of identifying change and continuity, and then explore whether or not the Han Dynasty was really the Golden Age. The class explore the Silk Road and look at the reasons for the collapse of the Han Dynasty. Students make fake Instagram account to showcase Marco Polo's adventure (but then question ... did he really go to Ancient China?) and there is a video-based lesson on Disney's 1997 Mulan where students ask what is accurate and inaccurate about it. Your class will also explore Ancient Chinese inventions and develop the concept of significance in a Dragon's Den Project.
I created this series of lessons whilst teaching History at an international school in China so it means a lot to me to pass them on to fellow teachers! The unit has been created for high school students but will work with slightly younger students also.
