In this lesson, students will read a Wikipedia page about the Aztec Empire. They will then study the content of the article, while at the same time analyzing the style and structure of the genre of encyclopedia entries.
In this lesson, students will read an emotive travel brochure about the historical site of Stonehenge. They will then analyze it in terms of language and tone, as well as content and meaning.
Through studying a newspaper article which clearly shows bias, this lesson will help students see that we can make inferences based on on word choice and an understanding of connotation.
ANALYZING THE FEATURES OF A NEWSPAPER ARTICLE
One of the most effective ways for students to learn how to write articles, is for them to see and analyze examples of them. This lesson will not only guide students through the process of identifying the features of a news article, but will also have them critically analyzing them.
ANALYZING A SELF-HELP BROCHURE
Techniques of persuasion are everywhere! Not only do students need to learn to use them in their writing, they also need to be able to identify and analyze them in use. In this lesson, students have to closely analyze a self-help brochure in terms of the persuasive language techniques used.
ANALYZING A LETTER FROM A PRINCIPAL
One of the most important skills of close reading, is the ability to identify and decipher subtle tone through word choice and style - this lesson will help hone this skill.
Through studying a magazine article, students will see how genre and intended audience will shape the style, content and tone of a piece of writing.
ANALYZING AN EXTRACT FROM AN INSTRUCTIONAL BOOK
In this lesson, students will read an extract from an instructional book on best practices for creative writing. They will then analyze it in terms of language and tone, as well as content and meaning.
Through an examination of diary/journal entries, students will make inferences about the writers: their thoughts and emotions. This lesson will help students with the skill making inferences, as well as understanding and analyzing the subtleties of tone in writing.
