    US Symbols in Brief

Here are 21 passages on American Symbols for sharing with students. Written to give brief information, not full lessons; these passages can be just the thing for distributive practice or to set up further research or lessons. There is a picture or photograph for each page to engage students while a student/s or the teacher shares the passages.

Use them to: enhance Morning Meetings, introduce a social studies lesson, pull out for review, practice oral reading of non-fiction texts, read in small groups and then debate/discuss which one is more important, select two to compare and contrast as a writing prompt or Venn Diagram, use to stimulate discussions, review, or discuss content vocabulary for ESL students. I’m sure you will come up with more ideas; and I’d love to hear about them. The text in the Preamble to the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence passage, that might be required in some curriculum, are included on the appropriate slides.

Mayor, Governor, President Roles, and Voting Materials

Off-year elections are just as important to study as the big one every four years. Learning the roles a Mayor, Governor, and President play in our government are addressed here as well. We need to think about the basic knowledge students need to learn to be the basis of their understanding for the next five to ten years.

This resource will give you lots of supplemental pieces to make that learning stretch beyond the few paragraphs in a textbook. It’s designed to make your teaching easier and learning FUN! The prep is low and there are even assessment pieces included. While not all pieces are appropriate for all grades listed, there is an overlap offered to accommodate differentiations.
