About American Experience Presents The Presidents: LBJ

American Experience Presents The Presidents: LBJ is a comprehensive biography of the 36th President of the United States. The program originally aired on PBS stations throughout the U.S. Lasting about four hours, the video takes students through Lyndon Johnson’s political career including his time as a Congressman and as the majority leader of the U.S. Senate.

The program spends the bulk of the four hours, however, focusing in on LBJ’s time as president, first as an “accidental president” who came to power because of the JFK assassination, and then as a president elected in his own right.

This exploration of the LBJ administration means that the video does an excellent job of highlighting major events of the 1960s, including in particular the Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War.

    Where to find the video

The Presidents: LBJ plays from time to time on public television stations across the country and is also sometimes available on streaming services. The best way to find out where it might currently be available is to run a simple Google search.

For teachers who prefer to purchase hard media, American Experience Presents The Presidents: LBJ is available as part of The President’s Collection, which provides American Experience biographies of more than 10 20th-century presidents, all bundled together in a very affordable set. The episode focusing in on LBJ can also be purchased separately from PBS online.

Format of video that goes with these The Presidents LBJ Worksheets

The Presidents: LBJ is usually presented in two 2-hour programs, providing a natural break in the historical narrative. Each of the two hour programs is further subdivided into two parts, providing a total of four logical episode divisions. Conveniently for high school teachers, each of these four parts lasts slightly less than an hour, which is about the length of time available in a typical secondary class period.

Hour One, “Beautiful Texas,” chronicles LBJ’s early years from his early childhood through his rise to the presidency upon the death of John. F. Kennedy.

Hour Two, “My Fellow Americans” explores Lyndon Johnson’s administration up until his re-election in 1964. (Because these two parts are usually presented as one program on television, the student worksheets also treat them as a unified whole, with problems numbered continuously from 1-130. Problem numbering will start over with the Hour Three materials.)

Hour Three, “We Shall Overcome,” chronicles 1965 and 1966, providing heavy focus on both the evolution of the Civil Rights Movement and the developing challenge of the Vietnam War in these years.

Hour Four, “The Last Believer,” zeros in on LBJ’s final two years in office, detailing his reaction as events on both the civil rights and Vietnam War fronts spun out of his control. Hour Four also covers LBJ’s life after he left office, right up to the irony of his death less than a week before U.S. involvement in Vietnam finally came to an end. There are 122 multiple choice problems included for Parts Three and Four.

About these American Experience LBJ Worksheets

This packet contains two worksheets, one for each half of the video series. Because each half is itself subdivided into two portions, the worksheets match this organization: the Hour Two worksheet starts on a new page, as does the one for Hour Four. This allows teachers to easily copy off and distribute one day’s material at a time if they wish.

All questions are presented in video order so that students can complete problems as they are watching. Tracking information as the video plays will help students to pay more attention and learn more, and students may also find that at times, the questions help to clarify what they see taking place on-screen.

Teacher Convenience Features Included with these American Experience: The Presidents LBJ Worksheets

All worksheets include answer blanks in case teachers want students to write directly on them. Having answers marked on the blanks instead of just having the correct choices circled makes it easier for teachers to review student efforts.

Sometimes, consumable worksheets are the best approach for a given class, but in other cases, teachers may want to copy off a file set of worksheets that can be re-used from year to year or class to class. To help make correcting as efficient as possible in that case, I have included special student answer sheets where answers can be recorded. The teacher answer keys exactly match the format/setup of the answer sheets in order to make correcting fast and easy!

There is one answer sheet and answer key for Hours One and Two (130 questions in all) and another one for Hours Three and Four (122 questions in all).

I do hope that you find these American Experience Presents The Presidents: LBJ worksheets a valuable addition to your U.S. history or government teaching repertoire!
