Alphabet and Initial Sounds Matching Task Cards Literacy Center Bundle

Have your students practice their initial sound and letter recognition with this bundle of task cards perfect for your Literacy Center activities. These easy prep, hands-on phonics, and alphabet & initial sound task cards provide you with a fantastic small group or literacy center activity.

These task cards have your learners reading the uppercase letter on the base cards and finding the matching lowercase case letter. You decide how many letters they are working on based on their skills and/or the letters you have been working on.

Your learners will look at the picture, say the word, listen for the initial sound of the word, then find the correct alphabet letter card to match it to. You decide how many letters they are using based on their skills and/or the letters you are focusing on.

Other uses for the initial sound and alphabet cards include:

• Find the sound: lay out a selection of initial sound cards, and ask the students to find the picture that starts with the …… sound. You could also focus on the end sound or vowel sound.
• Find the letter: lay out a selection of alphabet cards and ask students to find the letter which makes the …… sound.
• Alphabet order: provide a selection of alphabet cards and have students put them in order – can also be random letters.
• Flashcards: with the alphabet cards – show students a selection of cards (based on what you have been working on) and have them say the sound the letter makes (or the name of the letter if that is your focus).

Just print, laminate, and cut and you are set to go.

I store these in the larger photo display boxes as it makes storage and packing up so easy, but you can just as easily store them in a ziplock bag.

Because letter & letter-sound recognition is such an important part of the reading process, I like to provide my students with lots of opportunities to interact and solidify their knowledge. I find by just swapping out the theme of the activity, it helps to keep my students engaged. 1. Back to School 1 - match the glue bottle or glue stick initial sound picture to the correct paper lowercase letter card.
2. Back to School 2 - match the marker's initial sound picture to the correct crayon lowercase letter card.
3. Back to School 3 - match the clipboard's initial sound picture to the correct box of markers lowercase letter card.
4. School Bus - match the back of the school bus's initial sound picture to the correct front of the school bus lowercase letter card.
5. Shark & Shark Fin - match the shark fin's initial sound picture to the correct shark's lowercase letter card.
6. Apple Barrel & Apples - match the apple's initial sound picture to the correct apple barrel lowercase letter card.
7. Spider Web & Spiders - match the spider's initial sound picture to the correct spider web lowercase letter card.
