Description

This lesson offers an art history lesson and project that highlights Alma Thomas, an African American Artist. During the 1960s Alma Thomas emerged as a colorist, abstracting shapes and patterns from the trees and flowers around her.

The lesson is perfect for K through 4thd grade with some variations. Students will have the opportunity to explore texture and the painting portion of the project is a ton of fun! The lesson will invite the students to create a beautiful unique art piece inspired by Ms. Thomas and the techniques in this lesson offers incredible results – a great encouragement for those reluctant artists.


You can use these lessons in the following ways:

  • 30-45 minute sub plans
  • a simple design that helps to build a student’s confidence in creating art
