This was a wonderful activity that my students enjoyed. The reading is well written; the step-by-step examples helped students understand the process. The coloring pages are a nice touch so students can make their own.

All About Ukrainian Pysanky: Easter Egg Colouring Pages & Reading Passages

Welcome Easter and spring into your classroom with these fun pysanky colouring pages! Learn about the meaning behind the traditional colours and symbols used in pysanky, the various origin stories & legends, and observe various regional differences in pysanky design.

WHAT ARE PYSANKY?

Pysanky are Easter eggs from Ukraine. They have beautiful designs made from wax and strongly pigmented dyes. Although dying Easter eggs is a tradition throughout most of Eastern Europe, Ukrainian pysanky are probably the most well-known. The word "pysanky" comes from a Ukrainian verb, "pysaty," which means to write.

Traditionally, making pysanky was a sacred art. People had to clear their minds and think happy thoughts before and during egg decoration. In ancient times, only women were allowed to make pysanky. It is common to give these eggs as a gift to friends and loved ones at Easter. Some people make hundreds of pysanky to give away each year!
