Description
Teach your students what a mummy is and all about the mummification process in ancient Egypt. Begin by allowing students to activate their prior knowledge, make predictions, and stimulate interest through an anticipation guide. Next, discuss the steps of the mummification process with a clear Google Slides presentation. Finally, revisit the anticipation guide to verify predictions and summarize new learning!
Provide students with a hands-on experience, showing how the mummification process worked by engaging in an inexpensive and easy apple inquiry learning science experiment. You will need: an apple, baking soda, salt, zippered bags, and a scale. Walk your students through the steps of mummifying an apple. Students are asked to write a hypothesis of what will happen to the apple when placed in the salt and baking soda mixture. Students then record weight and observations over a 10 day period, making connections to the mummification process along the way.
