! This 1st Week-of-Art Middle School or High School 2-Art lesson plan will help fill your entire 1st week of school!

This drawing activity will make the beginning of the school year easier for you while ensuring a fun and engaging experience for your students.

The first week's objectives are to;

  • foster connection
  • creativity
  • self-expression
  • all while building a positive classroom environment.

The first week can be hectic, but don't worry - this resource is here to make it easier for you! Here's how to use it and the benefits it offers:

First Week Of Art Class Lesson Plan:

Part 1: GUESSING GAME! Approximate time: 10 minutes

Start by getting to know your teacher! Fun facts about your teacher’s education, family, pets, hobbies, and favorite foods.

•Use the provided worksheet to guess the answers about your teacher.

•The student with the most correct answers wins a prize!

Part 2: TIME TO SHARE & CONNECT: Approximate time: 10 minutes or longer depending on the time you need to fill.

Now, it's the teacher's turn to get to know STUDENTS better!

  • Share something special about yourself with the class.

Part 3: “ALL ABOUT ME” DRAWING WORKSHEET: (Voice level 0-1)

Approximate time: 4 Class sessions or use as an extended bell ringer each day for 2 weeks

Next, it's time for everyone to get to know everybody better!

•Students choose the Geometric Design Worksheet they like the best.

•Draw a name large in bubble-style or block lettering colorfully.

•Look at the matching direction sheet to see where to draw your favorite foods, family, pets, interests, or favorite sports & hobbies.

•Make drawings big and colorful!

•Students may use bubble letter words or drawings to communicate special things about themselves!

PACING: Chunk the drawing activity tasks across 3 days to allow ample time for quality work.

  • Day 1-2 After getting to know each other, students will draw and decorate their first names. Add color with markers and colored pencils.
  • Day 2-3 Students will start their self-portrait and add color and shading.
  • Day 4-5 Students will add interests and hobbies and add color and shading.
