All About Bats, Pocket PBL! Project Based Learning

The local zoo needs help. They want to add more bats, but they don’t know what kind. They need you to figure out which bats would be the best for the zoo. Zoo officials also want students to create a NEW bat exhibit!

Pocket PBL: Bats integrates elements of research, animals, science, design, and planning as students learn about bats while deciding how to create the perfect zoo exhibit for bats. There are 13 activities for students to complete. Each page involves an issue or topic they must solve, design, create, or research.

The Pocket PBL pages are half-page and sheets can be stapled together to form books/packets. Users can mix and match pages or do them all based on their needs.
The entire PBL is interchangeable to meet many needs and differentiated among students.

-Start the Pocket PBL

As students work through each page, they will make their own decisions and choose the outcomes based on information they learn. By the end, all students will have completed the project, but each version will be based on the creator’s imagination, creativity, and knowledge base.

8 Introduction
Students are given the objective to design a bat exhibit for their local zoo.

9 What They Know
Students brainstorm what they already know about bats.

10 Are, Can, Do
Students write about what bats can do, what they are, and what bats have.

11 Types Of Bats
Students write out the different types of bats.
Included on many pages are bats labeled with their type.

12 Pick It
Students pick a specific bat they want to research. They will write and draw it.

13 Bat Info Students research information about the specific bat.

14 Food Chain
Students design a food chain that includes the bat they chose.

15 Exhibit Info
Students will begin to design the zoo exhibit and use this page to help them do so. It includes suggestions they could pick for the exhibit.

16 Supplies
Students list supplies they will need for the exhibit.

17 Map It
Students create a map of the exhibit they have designed.

20 Bats In Action
Students illustrate three pictures of the bat exhibit in use.

21 Write It
Students write about why the bat they chose is important and why people should know about it.

22 Echolocation
Students answer questions on echolocation and draw an illustration of it in action.

23 Vocabulary
Students write or illustrate the definition of vocabulary words related to bats.

25 Graphic Novel
Students can create a graphic novel (comic) about their bat (or any kind of bat).
