This nonfiction unit gives students a chance to learn and read about animals in a non-fiction text and then respond to nonfiction through answering questions.
This product is designed to help kids at reading simple nonfiction passages and answering text-based comprehension questions. As students find the evidence that supports their answers, they participate in their very first close reading lessons.

This pack follows the same format on every passage; perfect for scaffolding students towards independent work! It is also great for formative and summative assessments as well as reading groups, homework, whole group work, individualized work, research, morning work, substitutes, intervention and more!
Written for 1st grade, but may be useful to Kindergarten and 2nd grade students as well.

In the Informational/ Non-Fiction Reading Comprehension Passages you will find 72 pages containing:
24 informational reading comprehension passages are included. There are 3 different versions/ways to check for student understanding.
Version 1: With each passage, there are three multiple choice questions which have prompts for finding evidence.
Version 2: With each passage, there are three multiple choice questions with NO prompts to find the evidence.
Version 3: With each passage, there are lines for written responses which include the same questions as the multiple choice page.
*Please note that the passage/questions are the same on each page- but the prompting and support is different on the 3 versions- PERFECT for differentiation!

In the Main Idea (or Main Topic) and Key Details Passages you will find 48 pages containing:
There are 24 different animals included in this packet. These are the same 48 animals and the same passages, slightly adapted. There are two versions of the worksheet. One page has lines to support beginning writers and the other page has no lines for students who are stronger writers to allow them to write more. These graphic organizers will be helpful to students as they determine the main idea and find the details that support it. The passages are the same on both pages.

I have used these activities in my own first grade classroom. All of the texts are leveled by lexile to be grade level appropriate for first grade, but it could also work well with advanced kindergarteners or second graders who are reading below grade level. So this can be used with multiple grade levels in a variety of ways and can be differentiated based on ability or need!
