Algebra Math Middle & High School Real Life Finance Budget Project
What educators are saying
Description
This project is meant for high school students or advanced middle school students. It is designed to allow them to research careers, cost of living in different areas and, most of all, teach them how to budget. This project explores the 50/30/20 budget concept where 50% of your net income goes towards needs, 30% wants and 20% savings. It allows for flexibility within those categories so students can learn to cut corners in one area if another is more important to them. They will be able to explore realistic options, such as whether they can afford to live alone or may need a roommate. They will be faced with taxes, insurance, gas costs etc. In the end, they will have to make choices as to how to allocate their available funds to live a life they are happy with. There are reflection questions throughout this project which force students to consider things like emergency expenses and savings, for example.
You can choose to print this project or have them complete it online. For the online option, I included a google slides version where students can type their answers. This product is clear and guides them through the project. It gives them instructions on exactly what to do in a section-by-section format.
The project ends with a presentation of what their "life" looks like. You can certainly choose to skip the presentation if you prefer.
