What educators are saying

I used part of the material last year and planning to use it this year as well. The material was very helpful in organizing activities for my students.

Description

Unit 2 includes 20 pages of interactive guided presentation notes on Solving Equations in one variable and the corresponding Word Problems. The notes included here are for Unit 2 only. Hopefully, you already tried out my ***FREE*** Unit 1 Guided Presentation Notes available here on TPT and found your students to be more engaged and well behaved than ever before, and now your are ready to begin Unit 2.

Unit 2 includes vocabulary, activities, thoughtfully selected examples, and guided practice on:

* Solving One-step Equations
* Solving Two-step Equations
* Solving Multi-step Equations with Combining Like Terms
* Solving Multi-step Equations with Distributive Property
* Solving Multi-step Equations with Fractions
* Solving Equations with Variables on Both Sides
* Solving Proportions
* Solving Equations given by Simple Word Descriptions
* Solving Sum of Two Number Word Problems
* Solving Perimeter Word Problems
* Solving Consecutive Number Word Problems
* Solving Proportion Word Problems
* Solving Absolute Value Equations

My philopsophy on word problems is simple, teach one basic kind of word problem at a time. Let the students gain confidence and familiarity with the solution format for just that kind of word problem. My notes flip back and forth between solving a given kind of equation and it's related kind of word problem. For example, I teach Solving Equations with Combining Like Terms the day before teaching Sum of Two Number Word Problems. The word problems allow the learner to keep practicing the new equation solving skill before moving on. Later, I make the jump to mixing all the word problems up and helping students think through each kind abstractly. By then, they have a framework for word problems and much more confidence in their ability to represent the problems with symbols.

Helpful Hints:
In my classroom, I give each student a copy of the notes at the beginning of the unit (or you could ask students to print the notes out at home and bring them to school). I begin each lesson by leading the students through part of the notes using my document camera, but then I often allow students to come up and demonstrate, or to go to the board to try a problem. Sometimes, I assign a whole set of problems and then let one student show all the answers, other times students come up one at a time to show solutions as we discuss their answers as a class.

Even if you don't want to give your students pre-printed notes, having this set as your own personal reference will save you hours and hours of having to plan and choose out example problems. That is invaluable, especially if you are a new teacher with a million things to do.

Another Helpful Hint for Unit 2:
The using proportions activity on page 17 of the notes "Estimating Fish in a Lake" gives directions for students to complete the activity with beans or fish crackers and a cup and bag. However, the past couple of years, I have just had one brown paper bag for the whole class, and I have led the students through the activity quickly as a 15 minute investigation. Otherwise it can take the entire period.

The key is included in this digital download. The key is only a suggested guide, and basically it is filled in the same way I fill it in with my own students under the document camera. Everyone teaches a little differently, of course, that is the beauty of guided notes, they leave plenty of room for you to do what you do best...teach in your own style!

Also here on TPT, look for the Unit 2 multiple choice test to accompany this unit. And be sure to "Follow me" to receive updates on my new products.

The pages are numbered from page 15 to 35 because they follow from Unit 1.

The cover page has the CA state standards for the unit listed at the bottom (the state in which I teach). I decided to leave them there to show you what my students see, but you may want to cover them with your own state standards.

Other key words: 2-step, 1-step, 2 step, 1 step, two step, one step, solve, solving for x, linear equations, interactive notebook pages.
