What educators are saying

Really good resouce for my agribusiness class! They were able to pace themselves through the assignment.

Description

Student groups take control of an agribusiness and use map resources to choose locations to build new stores within the United States-- locations with access to transportation, work forces, and ready markets for products. Through research, information organization, and decision-making, each group writes a business proposal placing a farm and tractor store at an absolute location. Connections between geography, agriculture, and business emerge through their justifications.

Agribusiness And Geography: Building A Farming Supply Store addresses the following Common Core Standards for Literacy In History/Social Studies and Writing: 6-8RH.1, 6-8RH.2, 6-8RH.4, 6-8RH.7, 6-8WH.1, 6-8WH.4, and 6-8WH.5.

This activity is suitable for grades 6 through 8 and includes teacher directions, a comprehensive scoring rubric, all necessary maps, a “previewing the project” activity, a vocabulary chart, a teacher glossary, a map research chart, a map data-analysis activity, a writing graphic organizer, an editing and proofreading checklist, an accommodated version of student materials for special needs students, and an answer key.

PDF and modifiable Word versions of this activity are included in the "zipped" download file.

Communicating the importance of geography to middle school students in the age of voice command GPS navigation can be tricky, but David Cooper's problem-based learning activity involving geography, business, and real-world application puts challenge and curiosity in your corner!
