What educators are saying
Description
This is a great activity to use after introducing the agents of socialization and resocialization. My students rotated through the five stations to analyze examples of each of the agents of socialization/resocialization and reflect on their own socialization. I used this assignment as a part of my Socialization unit in Sociology I. ALL MATERIALS ARE INCLUDED, with the exception of children's books for Station 1.
Station 1: Media - YOU WILL NEED TO PROVIDE YOUR OWN CHILDREN'S BOOKS OR MODIFY THIS PART OF THE ASSIGNMENT TO FIT WHAT RESOURCES ARE AVAILABLE TO YOU. I checked out children's books from the local library that I felt highlighted some sort of socialization. Students are asked to choose 5 children’s books and skim through them. Then, they explain the behavior, value, or knowledge that each would socialize children to have and reflect on their own socialization through media.
Station 2: Family - Students are asked to read the article “Duggars Share Rules of Courting” and answer the questions, then reflect on the socialization they experienced in their own families.
Station 3: Peer Group - Students look through cards that contain pictures that represent an activity or action that a peer group might influence one to do. As a group, they are asked to sort them into two categories: “positive” or “negative”. They then choose 5 of the activities/actions from the positive category and list specific examples of how their peer group as influenced them in that area.
Station 4: School - Student look at the examples of “Classroom Rules” used by teachers in Elementary and High School, choose 5 rules and explain what life skills those rules help socialize students to learn. Then they are asked to consider their opinions on school as an agent of socialization.
Station 5: Resocialization - Students watch a clip about what the first day at West Point is like on YouTube and apply vocabulary terms related to resocialization to what they saw in the clip, while also considering their opinion on the topic. A link to the YouTube video I used is included in the product.
Thorough directions are included in each section of the activity. The activity was created in Google Docs, so it is easy to modify for your needs. It is print ready, or can be assigned to students digitally.
