Description

Animal Adaptations: The African Elephant Reader's Theater Script

Grasslands Habitat

Level 2

Bring your science standards to life with this engaging Reader's Theater play designed to help your students learn about animal adaptations within their habitat. This fun script reinforces reading skills, science standards, science vocabulary, fluency, and speaking and listening skills. But best of all, its fun!

Through this script, students will learn about African elephants and their various physical adaptations that help them to survive in the hot, grasslands habitat of the African savannah. They will also briefly learn about another animal within this habitat, the gazelle, that has adapted to survive also, and how these adaptations are similar or different to those of the elephant. Included is a practice/review page for students to identify the elephant's adaptations that were mentioned in the script. An answer key for this is also included.

This is a Level 2 script. This script has more challenging vocabulary than a level 1 and goes more in depth on the topic of adaptations. This script is ideal for stronger 2nd-3rd grade readers or on grade level 4th grade readers. This could also work for 5th grade readers who may be reading below grade level as well as mid range 2nd grade readers with teacher/adult support.

There are 6 characters, two with bigger speaking roles. The bigger speaking roles are identified on your script. You could easily combine narrator parts for less roles or split up lines to accommodate another reader.

This script is rich with vocabulary and has simplified explanations about adaptations. Science vocabulary is underlined throughout the script to reinforce science content and understanding. It is important for even our struggling readers to use the proper science terminology. The repetition of reading a script and practicing lines is a great way to help them memorize some of the harder vocabulary words to read, as well as improve their fluency.

This script would be a great tool to use in guided reading groups or in science centers. To extent it further, you could have students design a backdrop and props and perform this play for their classmates or families which is always fun and helps the learning really come alive.

*Little Lyrical Learners scripts are leveled to meet the needs of all readers within your class. Levels range from 1-3, getting more challenging the higher the number.
