Description

Black History Month is not the only time to feature African Americans in STEM! This product features math and literacy activities that are useful during Black History Month or anytime during the school year. This product includes 10 African Americans involved in STEM or STEM-related fields. STEM, with its focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, is becoming an important part of education. They are grouped in pairs under the following categories:

The Pioneers

Sarah Goode: The first African-American women to receive a patent

Thomas L. Jennings: The first African-American to receive a patent

The Mathematicians

Katherine Johnson: NASA mathematician who calculated the trajectory of the first manned space mission

David H. Blackwell: First African American inducted into the National Academy of Sciences

The Explorers

Mae Jemison: The first African-American woman to travel in space

Guion Bluford: The first African-American man to travel in space

The Astrophysicists

Reva K. Williams: The first African-American woman to receive a Ph.D. in Astrophysics

Neil deGrasse Tyson: Famous astrophysicist who has appeared on numerous television programs.

The Chemists

Marie Maynard Daly: The first African-American woman to receive a Ph.D. in Chemistry.

James Andrew Harris: Credited with the co-discovery of elements 104 and 105 on the Periodic Table of Elements.

Each category features a literacy activity and a math activity. All of the activities have been designed in an introductory format to help maximize instructional time. Answer keys and rubrics are included. There is also a bonus STEM activity: Can you escape the Earth? There is no rubric for the STEM activity.

Each purchase of this product is for one individual teacher (licensee). The individual licensee can make copies for one classroom only. Please do not share this product with co-workers, grade levels, or within schools or districts without purchasing the appropriate number of licenses.
