Worksheet activities

If you are looking to introduce your students to two-step addition and subtraction problems then these worksheets are suitable just to ease the students in. There are no trick word problems. There is an opportunity for students to use their own methods of solving the questions and share with the class.

Other Suggested Uses

You can use the activity sheets in small group work and one-to-one teaching. You can use manipulatives to explain the problem and highlight what needs to be written down to solve the two-step equations. For example, Activity 35: use real paper to solve how many sheets of paper are left in the school secretary's printer.

Early Finishers

Use the worksheets as an extension to your lesson on two-step math problems. If you have students that work very quickly then place these worksheet activities in the extra work tray for them to access. They can self-check with the answer sheets/cards.

Challenge: If you have good readers in your kinder class and 1st grade, then they should be able to work through the problems.

Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract. If 8 + 3 = 11 is known, then 3 + 8 = 11 is also known. (Commutative property of addition.) To add 2 + 6 + 4, the second two numbers can be added to make a ten, so 2 + 6 + 4 = 2 + 10 = 12. (Associative property of addition.)
Relate counting to addition and subtraction (e.g., by counting on 2 to add 2).
Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.
