What educators are saying

I love everything made by this seller. I know that any resource I purchase is going to be aligned perfectly to state standards. This was a huge time saver, thank you!
My students loved working on this escape room. It definitely gave them the challenge that they needed.

Description

Now updated to include a completely digital friendly option- a link for students to click on and a separate student handout that can be sent to students digitally!

I created this as a fun way for my students to tackle difficult problems focused on adding and subtracting decimals with a fun Harry Potter theme. Hermione's bag has gone missing and it turns out Professor McGonagall has found it and set up some puzzles for Hermione, Ron, and Harry to complete before the final location is revealed. Each problem that students solve will get them closer to finding the location of the bag. After each problem is solved, a secret number is revealed, either in a Google Form where students self-check their answers, or by the teacher. Each problem is in the form of a letter sent to Harry, Ron, and Hermione from Professor McGonagall - my students had so much fun solving them! At the end of the activity, the students must enter their secret numbers obtained in order to find the final location of the bag.

There are 5 challenges for the students to complete and each is in the form of a challenging puzzle-type problem, all embedded in a fun story. I used this with my higher level 4th and 5th grade students. It is a perfect partner activity or enrichment option!

Easy prep! Just print out the problems for students to complete and choose whether you want the students to check their answers digitally by using a Google Form, or if you want the students to check their answers with you.I had my students complete this without a calculator, but using a calculator would be a way for students to focus more on the problem solving aspect of the activity and less on the calculations.

Digital Checking Option- Students can type their answers into a Google Form I created to go along with the activity. Students must get the answer correct to move forward and get each secret number. The entire activity can be completed without the teacher for the digital option.

Non-digital option- Students solve each question and then get the answer checked by the teacher. The teacher reveals the numbers after each problem and then students give the teacher the final combination at the end so they can find out the location of the bag.

Your students will love solving this mystery!

Read, write, and compare decimals to thousandths.
Read and write decimals to thousandths using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form, e.g., 347.392 = 3 × 100 + 4 × 10 + 7 × 1 + 3 × (1/10) + 9 × (1/100) + 2 × (1/1000).
Compare two decimals to thousandths based on meanings of the digits in each place, using >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons.
Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.
Draw points, lines, line segments, rays, angles (right, acute, obtuse), and perpendicular and parallel lines. Identify these in two-dimensional figures.
