What educators are saying

I used this with 8th grade students at the beginning of the year as a review of 7th grade material. The students found this challenging but most were able to solve.
My students were definitely engaged by this escape room. I was surprised by the number of students who got tripped up by the puzzles, so be ready to explain to them how to break the codes (beyond just solving problems). It was a well made product and I'll use it again.

Description

Practice addition and subtraction of rational numbers in an engaging digital escape room! Students will race to match equivalent expressions involving adding and subtracting positive and negative numbers, figure out the signs of sums and differences of decimals or fractions on a number line, solve word problems, find the distance between points using knowledge of absolute value, and much more to save a submarine that has been sabotaged. Based on seventh grade standard 7.NS.A.1, this online breakout as an easy to use, no prep, self-checking way to review material or practice for a test. This is a fun worksheet alternative that can be used for both in-class or distance learning.

Escape rooms are great for encouraging collaboration among students and an excellent way to get kids engaged in learning. This digital breakout gives students the opportunity to use their knowledge to solve puzzles using addition and subtraction of rational numbers as they follow a story line and save the submarine from sabotage.

Skills required to complete the puzzles:

  • Add and subtract rational integers, fractions, and decimals
  • Calculate the distance between a positive and a negative number (one method would be to find the absolute value of their differences)
  • Use a number line to aide in addition and subtraction of positive and negative rational numbers
  • Solve word problems involving adding and subtracting positive and negative rational numbers
  • Match equivalent expressions to demonstrate understanding of subtraction as adding the additive inverse and other addition and subtraction rules that apply to negative numbers

What is included in the PDF?

  • Detailed answer key
  • Teacher Tips
  • Optional recording page for students to show their work, write equations, and work out some of the puzzles.
  • Optional success signs to snap a photo with to celebrate saving the submarine!

FAQ

  • Do students need to have Gmail™ accounts? NO! Anyone with internet access and a tablet, computer, or even phone can complete the breakout. The escape room is automated by a Google Form™, but does not require the teacher or students to have Google™ accounts.
  • How long will this take? That is the hardest question as the answer varies depending on each classroom, student, or group. Some students with a firm grasp on the concepts covered in this escape room will be able to complete the challenge very quickly (20 minutes), others will take longer. The majority of students will take between 35-45 minutes. Requiring students to use the recording form will increase the amount of time required to complete the puzzles. The form will not save student data, so if you are worried about your students not finishing on time, simply have them write their answers on scratch paper. They can then come back and quickly re-enter their answers and pick up where they left off.
  • Will students have to search the web to figure out the puzzles? NO! All of the information needed will be provided in the Google Form™. The math in this activity is all standards-based.

Apply and extend previous understandings of addition and subtraction to add and subtract rational numbers; represent addition and subtraction on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram.
Understand 𝘱 + 𝘲 as the number located a distance |𝘲| from 𝘱, in the positive or negative direction depending on whether 𝘲 is positive or negative. Show that a number and its opposite have a sum of 0 (are additive inverses). Interpret sums of rational numbers by describing real-world contexts.
Understand subtraction of rational numbers as adding the additive inverse, 𝘱 – 𝘲 = 𝘱 + (–𝘲). Show that the distance between two rational numbers on the number line is the absolute value of their difference, and apply this principle in real-world contexts.
Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract rational numbers.
