Description

If you are looking for a different kind of math worksheet, then you found the right resource!

These four fun worksheets will motivate your students to practice adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators.

This resource is Set 2 of the Secrets of the Toons.

Presented on each worksheet is a secret of a toon character. As students solve the fraction problems, they will use problem-solving and critical-thinking skills to help them eliminate toon characters and uncover the secret.

For Set 1, go to Secrets of the Toons Set 1

Uncovering the secret of a toon character:

  • Each student will need 2 pages: A toon character page and the fraction/clue worksheet
  • For each question on a worksheet, students solve the two fraction/mixed number problems and cross out the two boxes containing the simplified answers. The remaining box contains the correct clue to help students eliminate one or more of the toons on the toon worksheet.
  • At the bottom of the fraction worksheet, there are blank lines that will reveal the final clue to the secret.
  • The last toon remaining is the toon with the secret.
  • For added fun, students can collect a toon card once they uncover the secret. (optional)

These worksheets are perfect for partner work.

Included: All materials come in color and black/white.

  • The Toon character page
  • The fraction/clue worksheet - 12 fraction problems per page
  • Details of the toon’s secret - 2 versions
  • An example is provided to show the students how to use their problem-solving and critical-thinking skills to eliminate the toon characters.
  • Answer keys - The answer keys show equivalent fractions with the LCD, and the answers are in their simplest form.

On each worksheet, students will use a few additional math skills to help them uncover the secret of the toon character. Below is a list of the worksheets and the other skills.

Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, 𝘒/𝘣 + 𝘀/π˜₯ = (𝘒π˜₯ + 𝘣𝘀)/𝘣π˜₯.)
