What educators are saying

One of my favorite things to use with my students - they responded really well to it and it aligned perfectly with my standards!
Will 100% be using this resource again! Students were very engaged and did a tremendous job at analyzing the lyrics. As a class it was enjoyable to see which songs students were already familiar with and to see them realize when some of their favourite songs were popular.

Description

This is an activity that I created for my American History class that can be done in the classroom or in the computer lab (need access to YouTube). **UPDATED on 6/28/20: This activity is available in the following formats: Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and PDF. Fun distance learning enrichment activity that students will engage with.

Students listen to 6 songs (titles listed below) and are to analyze the songs in a graphic organizer and then complete a reflection. They should be able to compare and contrast the lyrics/tones from some of the popular songs of the 1980s. Then I follow up the activity with a discussion about the music/tones/lyrics.

Lyric sheets are provided for each of the 7 (Included an extra song - students still only have room on the chart for 6 songs) songs:

"Born in the U.S.A." - Bruce Springsteen

"Like a Prayer" - Madonna

"Eye of the Tiger" - Survivor

"I Wanna Dance with Somebody" - Whitney Houston

"Livin' on a Prayer" - Bon Jovi

"Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" - Cyndi Lauper

"Beat It" - Michael Jackson
