What educators are saying

Love this resource! Academic vocabulary is so important, especially for preparing for test taking so students understand what is being asked of them. Thanks so much!

Description

To perform well on academic tasks, students need to master academic vocabulary. Even though they may recognize all the words on academic tests and tasks, do they really understand the critical academic vocabulary well enough to correctly and completely answer questions on standardized tests? Knowing what a question is asking is essential. The 29 verbs in this packet are critical to understanding the questions on standardized tests.

The 29 verbs covered in this packet include these words: analyze, articulate, cite, compare, contrast, comprehend, delineate, demonstrate, describe, determine, develop, distinguish, draw, evaluate, explain, identify, infer, integrate, interpret, locate, organize, paraphrase, refer, retell, suggest, summarize, support, synthesize, trace.

This zipped file includes

1. Editable PowerPoint presentation

2. Non-editable PowerPoint presentation

3. Link for Google Slides presentation

4. PDF with print resources for the 29 words. (Non-editable)

The Presentations (both PowerPoint and Google Slides) have four slides for each word.

-What is it? Gives a definition of the word.

Sample it: This gives a sample test question with the word. The sample questions are based on familiar fairy tales, so the class has a common text and can discuss the question and answer.(The word demonstrate is based on a simple math question instead of a fairy tale. The word organize uses a simple science concept.)

-Talk About It: This slide has three questions that use the word in an everyday context so students can discuss it with a partner or small group.

-Remember It: The final slide for each word has an activity or graphic organizer. These activities and organizers will give the students a hands-on experience with the word. The Resources pdf file has a printable for each of these activities/organizers. Many of the activities and organizers can be used in your reading, writing, math, or content area lessons.

**The fonts have been embedded in the editable version, but to ensure the presentation looks the way I designed it, you need to install these two free fonts: KG Empire of Dirt and KG Second Chance. Both of these fonts are available in Kimberley Geswein's TpT store. (https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Kimberly-Geswein-Fonts)

In order for the word placement on the editable slides to stay as they are designed, you need to install these fonts on your computer. If you use a different font, the word placement on the slides may not be the same. ***

The slides are arranged to be easier to understand and more complex to understand. There is a clickable menu at the beginning that will take you directly to each of the words. Or, you can drag the slides around to create an order you feel is best for your students.

This is a suggested grade level at which to introduce each word. Each grade should also be responsible for the words from the previous grades.

Kindergarten-compare, contrast, describe, distinguish, identify, retell

First- demonstrate, determine, draw, explain, locate, suggest, support

Second- comprehend, develop

Third- organize, refer, summarize

Fourth- infer, integrate, interpret, paraphrase

Fifth- analyze, cite, evaluate

Sixth- articulate, delineate, synthesize, trace

Academic Vocabulary Resources PDF

You will also receive a file with resources to go along with the vocabulary presentation. The file includes word cards, 3 per page, both color and black and white. There is also a set of small word cards that can be used in the vocabulary games and activities.

For each word, there is a page with the activity or graphic organizer described in the Remember It slide. The activity or graphic organizer can be printed and used with the Remember It slide. Many of them are intended to be used with the text you are currently using in class.
